Layering

How to Keep Your Baby Cosy This Autumn

Autumn nights in Aotearoa can be tricky for dressing your little one for bedtime. With temperatures dipping in the South Island and staying a bit milder up north, knowing how to layer your baby's sleepwear can make all the difference for a peaceful night's sleep. Let's break down some cosy options based on typical room temperatures add some essential tips for safe and comfortable sleeping.

What to Wear: A Simple Guide

Depending on the chill in the air, here’s how you can keep your baby just right:

  • 18-20°C: This calls for a long sleeve bodysuit with either PJs or a onesie, all tucked into a 3 seasons Woolbabe or 1.0 Tog sleeping bag (try brands like Ergopouch or The Sleep Store).

  • 20-22°C: A bit on the warmer side, so a zipsuit or onesie in the same type of sleeping bag works well.

  • 22-24°C: Stick to a long sleeve bodysuit in the 3 seasons Woolbabe or 1.0 Tog sleeping bag.

  • 24-26°C: For those warmer nights, lighter is better—think summer PJs or a short sleeve bodysuit, again in the 3 seasons Woolbabe or 1.0 Tog sleeping bag.

Tips for Keeping Baby Just Right

  • Socks on Chilly Nights: When it gets chilly, Woolbabe's Sleepy Socks are a great way to keep those tiny toes warm without overheating. (we sell them here!)

  • Keep an Eye on Temperature: A lot of baby monitors now come with a temperature reader, so you can keep tabs on the room’s warmth throughout the night. Adjust baby’s layers if needed to maintain a comfortable sleep environment. Alternatively a GroEgg or similar is a great help.

  • Check If Baby’s Too Warm: To make sure your baby isn’t overheating, feel the top of their back with two fingers—it should feel warm and dry, not hot and sweaty. Another trick is to check their ears with the back of your hand; if they’re hot and red, your baby might be too warm.

  • Safety First: Never put hats or mittens on your baby in bed as they can pose a risk. Keeping baby’s head and hands free ensures they regulate their body temperature safely and effectively.

These tips will help you navigate those unpredictable autumn nights, ensuring your baby is snug but not too hot. Remember, each baby is different, so it’s okay to adjust as you go along. Here’s to a cozy, comfortable autumn for you and your little one!
